How it works

Four steps, about five minutes

The Home Hardening Score walks the wildfire mitigation measures insurers price on, one part of the house at a time.

  1. 1. Start with your address

Your address tells us which county you are in and lets us save your assessment so you can come back to it. No account, no password.

  2. 2. Answer about twenty questions

Each question is about one part of the house you can look at yourself. A few ask you to step outside, so it helps to be at home. If you do not know the answer, say so. Not sure is a real answer here, and we never score it as a zero.

  3. 3. Get your score and your open items

You get a score from 0 to 100 covering only the things you can change, a breakdown by block, and a ranked list of what is worth doing next. Anything you marked as not sure comes back as an open item with a hint on how to check it.

  4. 4. Take the documentation to your insurer

You can download a package, email it to yourself to forward to your carrier, or ask Five Bays Insurance Agency to review your coverage. The package includes the measure inventory, the score breakdown, and a pre-filled letter citing the regulation that requires your insurer to answer.

What the score does not do

It is a self-assessment, not an inspection or a certification, and it does not predict whether a building will survive a fire. See the disclaimer for the full picture, and the methodology for how the number is built.
